The techniques employed today are basically the same ones used in the Middle Ages. The molten glass is cast into a shallow mould by blowing an elongated bubble which would then be trimmed and flattened, or it could be placed into an iron cylinder and blown again. Various techniques can be used for flattening the blown glass. This would then be cooled, or ‘annealed’ – a process taking up to 70 hours – and cut. Before 1500, the glass would be cut by a stick or grouting iron. From then on, diamonds are used as they provide a cleaner break. The glass is cut into pieces which relate directly to the shapes and colours of the original cartoon. Half-tones or textures are applied at this stage, for defining the details of faces, hands or drapery. Matting (a layer of glass paint) can also be applied at this stage to modify the colours of the glass.

Stained Glass Windows: Overview from the BBC Stained Glass Windows: Overview from the BBC
Stained glass windows have been an integral part of religious architecture for centuries. The techniques for making them came perilously close to being lost, but have been revived in recent times and now modern stained glass can be found in many public and private buildings. The following is an overview of the glass itself, the process of putting together a window, and the evolution of artistic styles.
